A Game About Digging A Hole Is Getting a Four-Player Sequel Because Everyone Wanted to Dig Together

Posted on October 1, 2026October 1, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

The viral digging game is being rebuilt from scratch around four-player co-op and crossplay

A Game About Digging A Hole is getting a sequel, and this time the hole is big enough for four players. A Game About Digging A Hole Together was announced on September 29, with Mipumi Games rebuilding the original idea around online co-op, crossplay and a much larger underground playground.

The reason for the sequel is unusually straightforward. After the first game took off, creator Ben said two requests kept coming back from players: they wanted more to do, and they wanted to dig with friends. The new game is being built around both.

It also lands squarely in the kind of co-op space we have been watching in our 15 Upcoming Co-op Games to Watch in 2026 and 2027, although this one started from something much smaller: a solo side project about digging one increasingly ridiculous hole.

The original code had to be rebuilt for the sequel

Ben’s announcement explains that the first game’s code was never really designed with a sequel in mind. Rather than bolt multiplayer onto it, Mipumi Games has rebuilt the game from scratch, creating a new foundation for multiplayer, crossplay and multiple platforms.

The basic loop is still deliberately simple: dig, collect resources, sell what you find, upgrade your equipment and go deeper. The sequel expands that with a larger world, multiple terrain types, four tool categories with more upgrades, additional collectibles and more things hidden underground.

Four players can now ruin the same hole together

A Game About Digging A Hole Together supports online co-op for up to four players and cross-platform multiplayer. Solo play is still supported, so nobody is being forced to turn a peaceful excavation into a group project.

The backyard from the first game has also been replaced by a new beach setting. Official screenshots show players tunneling through large underground spaces with names and depth markers visible over teammates, while the Steam page confirms that the familiar resource-and-upgrade loop remains at the center of the game.

A one-person side project became a million-selling game

The original A Game About Digging A Hole launched on Steam on February 7, 2025. Ben described it as a small game he made in his spare time while primarily working on Solarpunk. By August 2025, he announced that it had sold more than one million copies.

That success is what makes the sequel’s development story interesting. The first game is credited to DoubleBee on Steam; the follow-up is being developed by the Vienna-based Mipumi Games, which had already worked on the original game’s console versions and on Solarpunk.

The release window is not completely locked down yet

Shochiku Games‘ official project page lists the sequel for 2026, and its announcement says it is planned for the second half of the year. Steam currently lists the release date as “To be announced,” so there is a 2026 target but no exact launch date yet.

Confirmed platforms are PC through Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC, plus PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Fix Gaming Channel has not played the sequel; this is announcement coverage based on the developer’s reveal, official store pages and publisher information.
