The Until Dawn and Dark Pictures studio says the process is necessary for its sustainability
On August 11, 2026, Supermassive Games began a redundancy consultation process that it anticipates could result in the loss of up to 75 colleagues. The consultation is underway, but 75 completed layoffs have not been confirmed.
In a new public statement, the British studio described the decision as difficult and said it was a necessary step to help ensure the company remains sustainable.
Supermassive Games said it anticipates the process “will result in the loss of up to 75 of our colleagues.” It added that supporting the people affected will be its priority throughout the consultation.

What the announcement confirms
The statement confirms that a formal consultation process has begun and that the potential loss could reach up to 75 employees. It does not identify the roles, departments, locations, or projects that may be affected.
The company also has not announced a final number. Until the consultation is complete, the accurate description is that up to 75 jobs may be lost—not that 75 people have already been laid off.
Another difficult period for the studio
The new consultation follows earlier workforce reductions at Supermassive Games. In 2024, the studio entered a reorganisation and consultation process in which roughly 90 roles were reportedly at risk. A further consultation announced in 2025 was expected to affect up to 36 employees.
Those earlier rounds were covered by Gematsu in 2024 and PC Gamer in 2025. The figures describe separate processes and should not be treated as a confirmed running total of completed job losses.
The statement comes after Directive 8020
Supermassive Games released Directive 8020 on May 12, 2026. The science-fiction survival-horror game is part of The Dark Pictures Anthology.
The studio’s latest statement does not connect the consultation to the performance of Directive 8020 or any other individual project. It also does not announce delays, cancellations, or changes to the studio’s release plans, so claims about project impact would be speculation at this stage.
What happens next
The consultation process will determine the final outcome. More detail may emerge about the number of affected employees, the teams involved, and whether any projects will change, but none of that has been confirmed in the public statement.
For now, the most important part of the story is the human impact. Up to 75 people face an uncertain period, and Supermassive Games says it will provide support to those affected.
