Warhammer 40000 Dakka Squadron Flyboyz Edition a Nintendo Switch Review

Posted on March 8, 2024January 16, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

Orkish dogfights that shine in short, chaotic bursts

Reviewed on Nintendo Switch.Score: 7/10 Here is my Warhammer 40 000 Dakka Squadron Switch review.

Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron – Flyboyz Edition is an arcade aerial shooter built around one simple promise: strap into an Ork plane, spray the sky with “dakka,” and bulldoze your way through objectives with zero patience for subtlety. If you want more context on how the Switch version has been improved since launch, here’s our update post: Warhammer 40K: Dakka Squadron Receives Patch 1.0.1 on Nintendo Switch.

It’s loud, fast, and deliberately goofy in that very Warhammer way — and while the Switch port comes with a couple of small rough edges (mostly readability and audio clarity), the core loop still lands if you’re here for quick missions, simple upgrades, and a steady stream of explosions. If you’re also into broader 40K action coverage, you might want our Darktide update feature as well: Warhammer 40,000: Darktide “Nightmares & Visions” update.

Flying with the Boyz

At its best, Dakka Squadron nails that arcadey “point, shoot, explode” rhythm. Missions lean into dogfights, strafing runs, and objective clean-ups where you’re constantly juggling targets in the air and on the ground. It’s not a deep flight sim — it’s a loud arcade shooter wearing a plane.

Handheld-friendly, quick-session energy

On Switch, this is the kind of game that works well as a short-burst fix: jump in, clear a couple of missions, upgrade your loadout, and bounce. Controls feel straightforward, and once you’re in the flow, the game’s “Ork logic” sells the chaos — especially when you treat it like a portable arcade cabinet rather than a long-form campaign.

Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron – Flyboyz Edition

Release: March 8, 2024 (Nintendo Switch), Feb 18, 2021 (PC)

Genre: Arcade Shooter, Action, Aerial Combat

Developer / Publisher: Phosphor Game Studios / RedDeer.Games

Platforms: PC — Steam, Nintendo Switch — Nintendo eShop

What holds it back

The two things you’ll notice most are readability and audio clarity. Some on-screen text can be harder to parse on a smaller display, and certain voice lines/sound cues don’t always come through as cleanly as you’d want. None of it kills the experience, but it does shave a little polish off what’s otherwise a fun, simple loop.

Final verdict

Warhammer 40,000: Dakka Squadron – Flyboyz Edition on Switch is a solid arcade shooter when you approach it for what it is: quick missions, goofy 40K flavor, and constant explosions. The rough spots are real, but the core is still enjoyable — especially in handheld mode where that fast, messy pace feels right at home.
