Gritty, Visceral Combat in a Very Different HoYoverse World
Nodusfall is quickly gaining attention for its blend of co-operative action, mythological fantasy and some truly enormous enemies.
With its richly detailed environments and intense combat mechanics, Nodusfall has the potential to be a major player in the fantasy action genre. HoYoverse describes it as a multi-mythology cooperative action game, with co-operative play sitting right at the centre of its colossal creature fights.
Coming from HoYoverse, the same company that brought us Genshin Impact, Nodusfall’s gritty, visceral combat is a stark contrast to the animated, clean-cut lines of Genshin Impact’s illustrated, pastel-coloured universe.

A Realistic Medieval-Fantasy Approach
Nodusfall isn’t stylised in the same illustrated or anime-inspired way. It has a realistic medieval-fantasy approach to its world and characters, all rendered beautifully in Unreal Engine 5.
Standout moments from the Gamescom demo are the brutal creature fights in four-player co-op, taking on huge mythological monsters that can take up the entire screen as you strive to strike at weak points and gain a tactical edge in the fight of your life.

Visually, Nodusfall doesn’t disappoint. It’s an incredibly impressive universe that conveys some fantastic rugged landscapes and breathtaking vistas. It’s a world carved out of sweeping eroded canyons, high-walled slate cliffs and harsh, unexplored wastelands, enhanced further with fantastical lairs, nightmarish dreamscapes of fire and ice, and bleak, naturally abstract locations.
Fantasy in the Extreme
Wisely, the game has positioned itself cleanly. There’s no fuss or fluff here to complicate proceedings. In the four-player Gamescom demo, it’s you, three other players and a gigantic beast that may have the tail of an alligator, the body of a dragon and the head of a tiger, not to mention it’s the size of a large house. Oh, and it might also breathe fire.
This is fantasy in the extreme, where creature design has delivered some epic-looking foes, ready to distract you with just how cool they look.

The scale of these creatures is what makes the fights immediately stand out. You are not simply attacking something slightly larger than yourself; some of these things look as though they could flatten the entire group without giving it much thought.
Styles and Skills Slot Together
Styles and Skills slot together, designed to complement the combined fight against said foe. Players can mix different Styles and Skills to build their own playstyle, which puts the onus on the player to choose how they define their hero.
Customisation like this allows players to experiment and opens up more possibilities and variations than you could shake a pointy stick at.
Defeating powerful enemies also provides resources used to unlock new weapons and Skills, so the creatures you bring down feed directly back into how you build your character.
Your tactical approach and build are important factors to consider. You need to be useful in the fight, not useless, especially if you’re going to wear whatever it is you’re up against down over a long battle.
If slay, forge, build and evolve are its premise, then players can expect progression that brings a deeper layer to building out a distinct character that feels heroic and powerful in the fight.
PC Confirmed, but No Release Date Yet
Currently, only PC has been confirmed, with no word yet on whether console versions are planned. HoYoverse has also yet to announce a release date.
There is still a lot we don’t know about Nodusfall, but what has been shown so far makes it one of HoYoverse’s most unusual projects yet — and certainly one of its biggest visual departures.
