1. R.E.P.O.

Players: Up to 6 | Best for: Physics-based co-op horror

R.E.P.O. takes the familiar idea of entering dangerous locations for valuable loot and makes the objects themselves part of the problem. Up to six players have to locate valuables, physically carry them to extraction and somehow avoid destroying everything while monsters roam the area.

The physics system is what separates it from much of the co-op horror crowd. Heavy objects need teamwork, fragile objects need care, and even the monsters are affected by the same physics. Proximity voice chat completes a setup that can move from tense to ridiculous very quickly.

2. Phasmophobia

Players: Up to 4 | Best for: Ghost hunting

Phasmophobia remains one of the defining paranormal co-op games. Four investigators enter haunted locations with ghost-hunting equipment, gather evidence and try to identify what they are dealing with before the investigation goes badly wrong.

The appeal is still the uncertainty. You are looking for evidence rather than simply hunting an enemy, and communication becomes much less confident once activity starts increasing and somebody has to enter another room alone.

3. Lethal Company

Players: Up to 4 | Best for: Scavenging under pressure

Lethal Company sends a crew to abandoned industrial moons to collect scrap and meet an increasingly uncomfortable profit quota. Valuable items are scattered through dangerous facilities filled with creatures, traps and other reasons to reconsider going inside.

One player can stay aboard the ship and guide the team using radar and terminals while everyone else heads into the facility. That simple separation creates some of the game’s best moments when communication fails at exactly the wrong time.

4. Species: Unknown

Players: Up to 4 | Best for: Sci-fi creature horror

Species: Unknown puts a four-person crew aboard abandoned ships where completing the contract would be considerably easier if something dangerous was not hunting them.

Different missions can involve recovery, destruction, capture and elimination objectives, while players have access to tools including motion tracking, shields and other equipment. The creature changes the way the squad needs to approach each run, giving it more of a tactical sci-fi horror feel than many of the comedy-heavy games on this list.

5. The Outlast Trials

Players: Up to 4 | Best for: Brutal survival horror

The Outlast Trials brings the series’ disturbing horror into co-op without turning it into a conventional squad shooter. Players are test subjects trapped inside Murkoff Corporation experiments during the Cold War era, and surviving usually means running, hiding and working together rather than solving every problem with weapons.

You can play alone or in groups of two, three or four. For groups wanting something darker and more deliberately uncomfortable than the usual proximity-chat chaos, this is one of the strongest options here.

6. Escape the Backrooms

Players: Up to 4 | Best for: Backrooms exploration

Escape the Backrooms takes up to four players through more than 30 levels inspired by Backrooms lore. The environments keep changing, hostile entities have different behaviors and getting separated from the group can become a problem surprisingly quickly.

Proximity voice chat adds another complication because some entities can hear you. It finally left Early Access in October 2025, making it an easy pick for groups wanting a more complete Backrooms co-op experience in 2026.

7. Content Warning

Players: 2–4 | Best for: Filming terrible decisions

Content Warning has one of the better excuses for deliberately walking toward something frightening. You and your friends head into the Old World with a video camera, film monsters and other horrible things, then try to return alive so the footage can be uploaded to SpöökTube.

More views mean more money for equipment and future expeditions. The result is part co-op horror, part comedy and part terrible filmmaking expedition where running away is sensible but getting the monster on camera might be better for the channel.

8. GTFO

Players: Up to 4 | Best for: Hardcore teamwork

GTFO is for the group that wants co-op horror to fight back. Four-player expeditions send teams deep underground where ammunition, equipment and information all need to be managed carefully.

Stealth can be just as important as shooting, and a badly coordinated encounter can collapse quickly. This is less about screaming at your friends because somebody dropped an object and more about wondering which member of the squad just ruined an otherwise careful plan.

9. DEVOUR

Players: Up to 4 | Best for: Short, intense supernatural sessions

DEVOUR keeps its objective simple: work together, complete the ritual and stop possessed cultists before they drag everyone to hell.

Each map has its own setting, ritual items and version of the demon Azazel, with the pressure increasing as the match progresses. Randomized item locations and unpredictable AI stop every run from following exactly the same script, while full VR support is available for anyone who apparently feels the normal version is not stressful enough.

10. FOREWARNED

Players: Up to 4 | Best for: Paranormal expeditions

FOREWARNED replaces haunted houses with ancient Egyptian tombs. One to four players investigate cursed ruins, identify the Mejai haunting the expedition, recover artifacts and decide how far into the tomb they are willing to go.

Procedurally generated layouts, traps, puzzles and different Mejai abilities give the expeditions variety. It also supports both regular PC and VR play, including crossplay between the two modes.

11. Demonologist

Players: Up to 4 | Best for: Paranormal investigation and exorcism

Demonologist follows the paranormal investigation formula but gives the group another job after identifying the spirit: exorcising it.

Up to four players investigate cursed locations using different equipment while random events and supernatural activity try to make the process less comfortable. If Phasmophobia is already familiar territory for your group, Demonologist is one of the obvious alternatives.

12. No More Room in Hell 2

Players: Up to 8 | Best for: Larger zombie groups

No More Room in Hell 2 is the newest full release on this list. Torn Banner Studios launched version 1.0 on August 11, 2026, turning the game into an eight-player zombie survival experience built around infection, cooperation and getting through large numbers of undead together.

Its Steam reception remains more divided than most of the games above, so it is not here because everybody agrees on it. The eight-player support and full 2026 release make it interesting for larger groups that want horror with much more direct combat.

Which Co-op Horror Game Should You Play?

For pure chaos, start with R.E.P.O., Lethal Company or Content Warning. If your group prefers investigation, Phasmophobia, Demonologist and FOREWARNED give you something to solve while everything around you gets worse.

Species: Unknown is our sci-fi pick, The Outlast Trials works for something nastier and more serious, while GTFO is the choice for a group that wants teamwork to be genuinely important. If four players are not enough, R.E.P.O. supports six and No More Room in Hell 2 goes all the way to eight.
