ChatGPT Got One Kill in Crysis. Then Everything Fell Apart.

Posted on September 17, 2026September 17, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

I Let ChatGPT Play Crysis—It Got One Kill Before Dying Horribly

One kill, followed almost immediately by a terrible death. It controlled Crysis, but I would not call this playable.

I wanted to see whether ChatGPT could play Crysis Remastered. Using OpenAI’s Codex desktop app and a small local helper for keyboard and mouse inputs, it could look at screenshots, decide what to do, and send commands to the game.

The result? It managed to move around, aim, shoot—and kill one enemy. Then everything went horribly wrong.

One Kill. Then It Went Horribly Wrong.

This was probably the best few seconds of the whole experiment. ChatGPT lined up an enemy, fired, and got the kill. A few seconds later, you can also see why I am not ready to call AI-controlled Crysis playable.

Playable? I Wouldn’t Call It That

I had to get the character onto the beach first because even reaching that point became a struggle. Once it had control, ChatGPT could navigate, jump, aim, and fire, but everything happened slowly.

The biggest problem was reaction time. Crysis kept running while the AI checked a screenshot and decided what to do next. When enemies started moving and shooting back, those pauses became a serious problem.

So yes, it controlled Crysis. It even got a kill. But using AI to send a few delayed commands into a running shooter is very different from something I would describe as genuinely playable.

Could It Get Better?

Probably. Faster visual feedback and more reliable controls would immediately improve this kind of experiment. What I tested was a rough setup, not an AI system built specifically to play Crysis.

For now, one kill is enough. Next time, maybe I will see if it can survive long enough to finish part of a mission.
