The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Returns With Three-Player Co-Op

Posted on August 12, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

The 2011 Action RPG Is Back on PC and PlayStation

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North – Legacy Edition has launched with its three-hero campaign, online multiplayer, and local split-screen cooperative play.

Aspyr Media released the new edition on August 11, 2026. Its Steam page confirms single-player, online co-op, and shared or split-screen co-op for as many as three players.

The original action RPG was developed by Snowblind Studios and released in 2011. Its return makes a previously difficult-to-buy cooperative game available again. Readers looking for another party-focused RPG can also see our coverage of Gedonia 2 and its four-player co-op.

Three Heroes Fight in Northern Middle-earth

The campaign follows three heroes fighting Sauron’s forces in northern Middle-earth while the Fellowship continues its journey toward Mordor. Players can control Eradan, a Dúnedain Ranger; Andriel, an Elven Loremaster; or Farin, a Dwarven Champion.

Each character has different equipment, skills, abilities, and a distinct combat role. Players can switch between them during a solo campaign or form a complete three-person party through online or local cooperative play.

The game combines melee and ranged combat with loot and character progression. Its story includes familiar Middle-earth characters and locations while following a separate conflict beyond the Fellowship’s route.

A Strong but Early Steam Response

Steam displayed a Very Positive rating when checked on August 12, with 96% of its first 159 purchaser reviews recommending the game. That remains a small launch sample and will change as more players spend time with the release.

The PC edition is discounted by 10% through August 25, although prices vary by region. The official PlayStation launch trailer also identifies versions for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

The official PC listing does not provide a detailed technical comparison with the 2011 version. We are therefore not claiming specific resolution, frame-rate, or graphical upgrades.
