Well Dweller Is a Beautifully Disturbing Metroidvania Wrapped in Dark Fairy-Tale Charm

Posted on March 31, 2026May 2, 2026 By Aidan Minter

A twisted fairy-tale metroidvania with charm, menace, and striking storybook style.

There is no shortage of platformers and metroidvanias fighting for attention right now, so standing out is no easy task. For readers who enjoy dark side-scrolling worlds with a strong identity, recent examples like Silver Pines and Why You Should Play The Little Brave show just how much atmosphere and style can still matter in this space. Well Dweller already looks like another one worth watching.

Enter Well Dweller, a dark fairy-tale metroidvania full of charming characters and weird abstract monstrosities, set in a wretched kingdom where you play as Glimmer, a tiny bird armed with a matchstick, who must burn the wicked queen to save his family. The game is developed by Kyle Thompson, who also created the visually striking Crypt Custodian.

Promotional art for Well Dweller highlights Glimmer and the twisted storybook character style behind Kyle Thompson’s next game.

One of the strongest aspects of Well Dweller is its visual interpretation. It has a beautifully crafted twisted children’s book look and feel, as though it has taken some of the visual charm of The Nightmare Before Christmas and mixed it with the darker narrative influence of writers like the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Charles Perrault.

The characters living in the kingdom’s underbelly provide an eclectic mix of both cute and terrifying in equal measure, with some appearing as bizarre abstract 2D abominations. Exploration plays a major part in Well Dweller, as does solving puzzles, discovering secrets, and unravelling the mysteries buried within this rotted kingdom.

Glimmer stands at the centre of Well Dweller’s eerie fairy-tale world in this striking piece of promotional art.

In contrast to the dark and twisted premise, the game also offers touches that give it an endearing quality and help the player care about the characters. You will go camping with Ilda, a tiny mouse on the run from the queen’s grasp, and explore an abandoned castle with Looter, a mysterious scavenger searching the kingdom for the best wares to steal. All of this drives you forward as you search for and reunite with your sheltered siblings, who were snatched away one night by a crazed hunter.
