Building a Life Sim That Reflects Real Drama

At the core of Midsummer Studios’ first project is a simple but powerful belief: the most compelling stories are created by players themselves. Jake Solomon, best known for his work as Creative Director on XCOM and Marvel’s Midnight Suns, now serves as CEO and Creative Director of the new studio.

“The best stories in games are written by the players,” Solomon stated. “At Midsummer, we’re making a life sim focused on the drama of modern life, where our players will write meaningful stories just by playing, and then share those stories with the world.”

Meet the Founders

  • Jake Solomon – CEO & Creative Director, formerly at Firaxis for 23 years
  • Will Miller – Game Director, Lead Designer on Civilization: Beyond Earth, and Lead Engineer on Marvel’s Midnight Suns
  • Nelsie Birch – COO/CFO with 25 years in finance and operations leadership
  • Grant Rodiek – Former Director at Maxis, with 18 years on The Sims

Backed by seed funding led by Transcend—a venture capital firm with deep roots in gaming—Midsummer Studios has a strong financial and strategic foundation. Shanti Bergel, a former producer on The Sims and now Founding Partner at Transcend, shared his excitement:

“The Midsummer founders are industry veterans with the rare experience and design artistry required to deliver against this massive opportunity. I am delighted to support their journey to redefine the Life Sim category.”

A Studio Built Around People

Midsummer isn’t just innovating in gameplay. The studio promises a collaborative and sustainable work culture that values employee happiness. With shared equity, unlimited paid time off, and a flat hierarchy, the team is creating an environment where creativity and well-being go hand-in-hand.

Solomon and the team emphasize that their goal isn’t just to make another life sim—it’s to reinvent the genre with a modern twist that resonates with today’s players and communities. The upcoming title remains unnamed, but anticipation is already growing within the simulation game space.
