Minh Le on Counter-Strike, Creativity, and Going Indie with Alpha Response

Posted on August 1, 2025January 6, 2026 By Ronny Fiksdahl

A candid conversation with the co-creator of Counter-Strike about building an empire, and starting over.

Minh “Gooseman” Le’s name is etched into gaming history. As the co-creator of Counter-Strike, he helped shape not just the tactical FPS genre—but online multiplayer culture itself. Now, decades later, Minh is back in the indie trenches with a new project: Alpha Response, a fast-paced tactical FPS built with Unreal Engine.

We caught up with Minh for a laid-back but revealing conversation about his career, his current game, and how it feels to go from Half-Life modder to industry icon—and back to solo dev. Looking for more? Check out our full feature on Alpha Response here.

From Vietnam to Vancouver: Minh’s Origins

“Growing up in Canada was a good opportunity for me. I was exposed to a lot of media and games I probably wouldn’t have seen elsewhere.”

Minh shared how his immigrant upbringing and exposure to Western pop culture shaped his passion for game development. The freedom to explore technology and creativity at a young age set the foundation for what would become Counter-Strike.

Building Counter-Strike: A Mod That Changed Everything

How did Counter-Strike go from a mod to a phenomenon?
“It was just a fun hobby at first. I didn’t expect it to explode like that. Once Valve got involved, things moved fast.”

How Counter-Strike started as a bedroom project, inspired by real-world tactics and a desire to make something more strategic than typical shooters at the time. Once Valve took notice, it snowballed into a global success.

The Long Break and the Return with Alpha Response

“I was away from the Counter-Strike scene for years. But I’m watching it again now—and it’s amazing how good the pros are.”

Gooseman drifted away from competitive FPS, but the rise of eSports and renewed interest in tactical shooters inspired him to return. Alpha Response is his new playground, designed to bring back that grounded, team-focused intensity.

On Alpha Response’s Development Challenges

What’s it like going indie again?
“It’s tough, but rewarding. We’re getting good feedback, and we’re just polishing it up right now.”

Minh and his team are knee-deep in development, focusing on core mechanics and refining the experience based on early tester feedback. Unlike the massive production machines of modern AAA shooters, Alpha Response is built by a small, focused team.

“We’re doing our best. It’s not perfect yet, but we’re improving the gameplay every week based on what players tell us.”
“It’s a bit like going back to the Counter-Strike mod days—except this time, the expectations are a lot higher.”
“We’re still figuring out what the final game will be. It’s evolving. And honestly, that’s kind of exciting.”
